Laws, Rules, And Regulations For Dumpsters

When it comes to trash, it might be tempting to think that as long as it’s getting tossed, anything goes. Unfortunately, too much toxic waste is thrown out every year, and is already taking a toll on the world around us. Any time you throw out old batteries or electronics, paint or oils, there is the likelihood of the toxins in these products emanating into the air and land around you, essentially affecting air and water quality.

Rather than guessing as to whether you should or shouldn’t place a certain item in dumpsters, whether public or private, take the high road and do some research on what is and is not allowed in your area.

Illegal Dumping

Illegal dumping is one of the biggest issues when it comes to misconduct around trash and waste. It’s not too uncommon to see old appliances or the odd piece of furniture left along the highway when someone doesn’t know how else to dispose of them. It may seem like illegal dumping isn’t that big of a deal, but illegal dumping is more than just frowned on in Texas. If you get caught dumping illegally you could face thousands of dollars in fines and possibly jail time.

You might not even realize what illegal dumping can include, so here are a few things to keep an eye out for:

  • Tires or mechanic equipment tossed on the side of the road
  • Old appliances left in an alley or vacant lot
  • Yard waste being dumped in a public space
  • Electronic equipment disposed of somewhere other than an electronics collection site

If you are aware of illegal dumping taking place or if you happen to catch someone in the act, you should immediately call the number of the dumpster company on the nearest bin. If you aren’t in an area with specified dumpsters, call your local police.

Do I Need A Permit In Texas?

Depending on where you plan to place your dumpster, you may or may not need a permit to have one. Dumpsters on private property typically do not require a permit, but if you have to place a dumpster on public property for any reason, you may need a permit. For example, if you’re doing home renovations and you rent a roll off dumpster, but it’s too big to fit in your driveway, you should check to see if you’re required to have a permit to keep it on the residential street for the duration of its use.

Can I Put Anything In My Dumpster?

Most household waste can go out to the dumpster, but it’s important to steer clear of dumping certain batteries, paint, ink, oils and anything that could ooze toxins into the atmosphere. If you are sure the batteries you need to throw out are alkaline batteries, then it is safe to dispose of them with the rest of your household trash.

Things like yard waste and dirt are also permitted to be thrown into a dumpster, so long as there is no contaminated soil going to the landfill.
